Carnival: Perkeos Maschggra

Tradition & festivals 2/22/2020 Salorno
Soon it is carnival time in Salorno! The little carnival mascot of Salorno, Perkeo the dwarf, will traditionally make his way through the village on carnival Saturday, accompanied by some of his friends.

„Maschggraaaaa“, the South Tyrolean word for carnival, will be the most-shouted word by Perkeo and his friends throughout the parade, which will take place on Saturday, 22 February 2020. The parade will consist of 20 wagons and 400 participants, which will pass through the whole village for your entertainment. Perkeo and his cupbearer, his personal doctor and his maid, the farmers and the housewives, the “Karbonari”, the “Cembrans” in search of a husband and many more will all come to celebrate their beloved Perkeo.

Everything will revolve around Perkeo on this day. Perkeo, the dwarf, existed for real, although many of his stories might be a bit exaggerated. He was born in 1702 in Salorno, lived as a jester at the “Heidelberger”-castle in Germany, moved up to being a cupbearer and then guardian of the great wine barrel of the castle. On carnival, he makes his way from Germany to Salorno to reign over the village. On carnival Saturday, he leads his train of loyal subjects through Salorno and on the last day he gives back the keys of the village to the mayor and returns to Heidelberg.
