Vilpiano is part of the municipality of Terlano. Vilpiano is situated fairly exactly half-way between Bolzano and Merano. The name “Vulpian” is first mentioned in the records in 1288. It is derived from “villa plana” - village in the plain. In 1313 the name had changed to “Fulpian”, later it became “Fülpian”. From 1564 Vilpian became the most widely used form.
